Trey Peters and Ian Field were struggling to get their class work assignments and do their homework because they did not have and could not afford laptop computers. Thanks to the generosity of ACCE’s supporters, we were able to purchase new laptops for five scholarship recipients and help ensure their success at Cape Cod Community College. It’s an important example of how Advocates for a Community College Education remains a vital safety net, even if students qualify for the state’s new free tuition program.
“The laptop is helping me succeed because it makes it a whole lot easier to type a paper with a fully working keyboard,” Trey says. “My last laptop had a few broken keys and would’ve been expensive to fix, so I had to type things on my phone instead. This laptop works great and I am very fortunate to have received it.”
Trey received a standing ovation for telling his story at last fall’s wine tasting/fundraiser of how ACCE helped him get on track and succeed at the community college, as he aims for a writing career.
Ian had similar praise for ACCE’s assistance. “The laptop that I received with the help of ACCE and my mentors allows me to get everything I need for school done. Things like turning in homework, writing essays, and researching projects can all be done on this laptop.”
Both students were awarded ACCE tuition scholarships and received the laptops in addition to that aid.
Cape Cod Community College President Dr. John Cox, commenting in September on the new free tuition program, emphasized that ACCE’s role is “still critically important.”
With the continuing support of volunteers and donors, who have been generous with their time and money, ACCE will keep on providing for the development of successful members of our community. We appreciate your generous support.
